The ‘great greening’ of springtime is well underway now and for the last few days my little bit of Yorkshire has been full of birdsong, butterflies and the smell of wild garlic. I hope you’re enjoying this early dose of sunshine and warmth too!
It’s been a long winter for me and I am very glad to see the greening of the woodland and hear the blackcaps and the other migrant birds filling the airspace with their exhuberant songs. I think most of us really begin to wake up at this point in the year, metaphorically stretching our wings and getting ready for the busy times ahead.
From May Day (Beltane) to the Summer Solstice is a high-energy season. As the daylight hours grow so, hopefully, does our energy and our enthusiasm to crack on with the year’s big projects and aspirations. The dreams and plans we incubated over winter and nurtured through the often harsh times early in the year, can now be put out into the sunshine to grow. Just like young seedlings, they’ll still need protection and lots of care, but this is the season to encourage strong growth and flourishing, in every aspect of life.
Our yoga practice can reflect this. We shrug off our ‘winter body’ and hopefully begin to enjoy a little more ease and spaciousness in our movements, and feel a bit more motivated.
If you’d like to join me on the yoga mat in May you can do so live on Tuesday mornings or via the recordings-only option. All the details are here.
